Sydney police officer admits molesting woman


A Sydney police officer admits molesting a woman and seeking information about her partner using a limited police database.

Joshua Alan James Wootton followed his victim for 11 days in February 2022, using a GoGet rented car to hide near his home, work and other locations.

On Thursday, the 32-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of harassment/intimidation with intent to cause fear of physical or psychological harm and one count of proprietary data mining in Downing City Center District Court.

Wootton has been with NSW Police since December 2019 and has been assigned to the East Suburbs Police Headquarters.

As of January 2022, he lives with his parents in Oran Park, where he was arrested on June 7th.Last year on Valentine's Day, he turned up unannounced at a woman's house and left roses in her driveway, the court heard.

The next day she told him his behavior was "inappropriate". "I don't know what your game plan is, but you need to stop acting up," she said.

Wootton then followed her seven times from February 17th to 28th.

license plate recognition, GoGet GPS data, toll and bank statements show that he was with her for 11 days.

On February 25, he was granted access to Cops, a police database to be used only for legal purposes and not for personal use, the court said.

He invented false motifs and inscriptions and began to search for the name of the man with whom he had seen the woman and the address of the house to which they had gone together.

The last time he stalked her, he went to the company where the woman worked and spoke to someone who then texted the woman.

"Josh wants to speak to me [here], is there something I should say or not?" asked her friend.

"Say what you want. Why the hell is he [there]? He's crazy, she replied.

Wootton will appear in court on June 9th.

Last Thursday the 32-year-old pleaded guilty in Downing Centre local court to one count of stalk/intimidate intending to cause fear of physical or mental harm and one count of assessing restricted data.

Wootton has been a member of the NSW police since December 2019 and was attached to the eastern suburbs police area command.

Since January 2022 he has been living with his parents at Oran Park, where he was arrested on 7 June last year. On Valentine’s Day last year he turned up at the woman’s home unannounced and left roses on her driveway, the court heard.

The following day she told him his conduct was “inappropriate”. “I don’t know what your game plan is but you need to stop your behaviour,” she said.

Wootton then followed her seven times from 17 to 28 February.

On 25 February he accessed Cops, a police database only to be used for lawful and not for personal reasons, the court was told.

Making up false reasons and entries, he conducted searches for the name of a man he had seen the woman with and the residential address they had gone into together.

On the final occasion he stalked her, he visited a business where the woman used to work and spoke to someone who had then notified the woman via SMS.

“Josh is [here] he wants to have a chat with me, is there anything I should say or not say?” her colleague asked.

“Say whatever you want. Why the fuck is he [there]? He’s a freak,” she replied.
